Qu Yuan was a loyal minister during the Warring States period. When his country fell to invaders, he drowned himself in the Miluo River out of grief. To honor him, people threw rice dumplings (zongzi) into the river to protect his body from fish and held dragon boat races to search for him and ward off evil spirits.
Today, the festival is marked by eating zongzi-sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves-and exciting dragon boat races. People also hang mugwort and calamus (types of medicinal herbs) on their doors to drive away insects and evil spirits. Wearing scented sachets, or perfume pouches, is another tradition believed to protect from disease and bring good Luck .
